For the filling

  1. Peel, core and cut apples into bite size pieces. Deseed and slice dates.

  2. In a saucepan put all the filling ingredients and cook over low flame till soft but not mushy, about 8 to 10 mins. You may sprinkle 1-2 tbsp water if needed.

  3. Remove from heat and cool.

For crumble topping

  1. Cut chilled butter into small cubes.

  2. In a mixing bowl mix in all the crumble ingredients except butter. Add butter and mix with your fingertips or fork till mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

  1. As you make the topping , preheat oven at 180 C.

  2. Grease a medium size shallow baking dish with butter.

  3. Put the fruit filling into the greased baking dish. Sprinkle crumble on top and press down gently.

  4. Bake at 180 C for 25 mins or top is golden and filling is bubbly and fruit juices start to ooze out.

  5. Serve warm.

For filling use any fresh fruit of your choice - like - peaches, pears, strawberries, plums.
You can even make it from a combination of the fruits. The above pic is a combination of apples and plums.
Instead of pre cooking the filling, you can mix all the filling ingredients in a bowl and set aside for 10 to 30 mins for flavors to deepen. Then put into greased baking dish, cover with crumble and bake.
You can substitute flour and oats with about 1 cup wheat flour or mix of oats and wheat flour. But you may need to increase the butter quantity to get the crumbly mixture - up to 80 to 100 gms.
